| Research Background &
Expertise

The Cardiovascular Research Institute (CRI), led by Stephen E. Epstein, MD,
an internationally recognized investigator, is responsible for
coordinating and performing all cardiovascular research within MedStar
Research Institute.
Located
on the campus of Washington Hospital Center, the busiest and most
comprehensive heart program in the country – over 12,000
catheterizations, 5,000 percutaneous interventional procedures, 3,500
open heart procedures, 3,000 ACS related catheterizations, and 1,000 ACS
patients admitted to the coronary care unit on an annual
basis.
Comprised
of world-renowned cardiovascular investigators, basic and translational
scientists, interventional cardiologists, research nurses, study
coordinators, technicians, sonographers, and support staff dedicated to
developing new technologies and strategies to enhance patient
care.
Investigators are experienced in managing Federal, commercial,
and privately sponsored research studies; currently, CRI is involved in
more than 50 clinical and translational research studies. Consortium of
investigators has over 1,000 publications in leading medical journals,
and hold prestigious academic affiliations and NIH appointments;
numerous research-based patents are held.
In-house
data coordinating center manages CRI’s proprietary recruitment and
genetic databases and has access to one of the largest inpatient
coronary care databases in the country with prospectively-acquired
information on over 5,000 patients.
Dedicated research
laboratories specialize in vascular and molecular biology,
pre-clinical animal studies, lipoprotein
metabolism, atherosclerosis research and cardiac imaging.
Highly sought
after research fellowship program has an established reputation of
producing leaders in the field of cardiology and vascular care.
Offers a
comprehensive cardiovascular continuing medical education (CME) program
and has a dedicated 12,000 square foot Cardiovascular Training and
Education Center (CTEC) to teach new concepts and techniques in the
diagnosis and management of cardiovascular and endovascular
disorders.
