Dr.
Burman is an experienced clinical trial investigator with over
250 publications in leading medical journals on the subject of thyroid
disorders. His specific research interests include Graves’ disease,
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and thyroid cancer. Dr. Burman is Chief of the
Endocrine Section at the Washington Hospital Center (WHC) in Washington,
DC. His academic appointments include Chief of the Integrated Endocrine
Fellow Training Program for Georgetown University and WHC, Professor
of Medicine to the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
(USUHS), and Professor, Department of Medicine at Georgetown University.
Dr. Burman has been the recipient
of several prestigious appointments and honors, including the Van Meter Prize awarded
by the American Thyroid Association for excellence in research. He is
a Member of the American Thyroid Association Council and has received
Master designation from the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Burman served as an Editorial Board Member of
Thyroid and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and
Metabolism. Additionally, he serves on the grant review committee for
the Veterans Administration, and an Ad Hoc Reviewer for the National
Institutes of Health. Throughout his career, Dr. Burman has held
leadership roles in and significantly participated on committees for the
Endocrine Society and the American
Thyroid Association (ATA). Recently, he was head of the
ATA Public Health Committee.
Dr. Burman graduated from the University of Missouri
Medical School in 1970. He completed an Internal Medicine Residency at
Barnes Hospital in 1972, and an Endocrinology Fellowship at Walter
Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) in 1974. During his tenure at
WRAMC, he served as Chief of Endocrinology, and the consultant in endocrinology
to the Surgeon General, as well as Chair of Endocrinology
and Professor of Medicine at USUHS. Upon retirement from the Army in
1994, Dr. Burman joined WHC.
